I have downloaded the file. Unzipped it and then copied the unzip and put it on

This PC > Windows (c) > and put it in a folder I created call hikvision.
Is that right?

Then I go through the camera and brouse for the folder to upgrade.

All updated. Set up all the motion zones, intruder zones and line crossing. Camera light comes on for 15 seconds when triggered.

Only thing I don't get is push notifications to my app.

Where you've set the alarms up on the NVR, you need to make sure you have the "Notify Surveillance Centre" option ticked under "Linkage Action", so on your NVR local menu thats:

System > Event > Normal Event > Motion detection > Linkage Action
