Using Google Sketchup to place cameras

I was looking for a way to get a rough estimate of camera placement and thought I would use Sketchup as I already had a model of my bungalow that I used for some garden and internal remodelling. I simply extended it to include the garage and part of the front drive and then I placed the camera where I intended to position it and set the camera properties to match my chosen Hikvision lens , as close as possible.

This is the Sketchup result with a 4mm lens...

I finally got around to installing the camera today and was pleasantly surprised how close it was to the Sketchup model. This is the Hikvision DS-2CD2345FWD-I with a 4mm lens.

Sketchup is free, very easy to use and seems to do a pretty good job. There are tons of tutorials on how to use it, so give it a shot.

A big thanks to the use-IP for their useful guides, videos and help in choosing the right camera.
