Strange Things Happening with Passwords on Hikvision NVR & Cameras

I have a Hikvision NVR and cameras which were working perfectly, until the weren’t.
Had a technician drop by who told me NVR was broken.
Bought a new one and larger hard drive, same problem, unable to get the NVR online.
I have a Starlink internet sysytem.

After a couple of days trying to sort this issue out I finally decided to reboot the router.
Online connection restored but no cameras working. Incorrect parameters being the issue.
Basically I had to put in the camera password.

Here is the curious thing.

The newly added password would not work, but if I used the one from the old NVR that was accepted for some reason.
Seems to me that Hikvisions systems are a bit strange which is not great, or maybe I have messed up somewhere along the line ?

Anyone had similar issues with the camera passwords ?

Hi @Ramses

The password issue you describe is a common one that confuses people.

Were all your cameras directly connected to the PoE ports on the old NVR? if they were, they would have been activated with the old NVR password.

Once activated with this password, the cameras will hold onto this password until you hard reset them or manually change the password.

This means that when you move those old cameras to a new NVR with a completely different password, the cameras will still be activated with the old password from the old NVR.

Thanks for the information Dan, very much appreciated.
I obviously am no IT guru and just wanted to share my experience as it may help others.
Your answer is excellent, will help me in the future if I have similar issues again.

Just trying to figure out what I should do with the spare NVR, will find a job for it soon enough I think, my wife already needs more cameras, or so she tells me :)
