Playing exported files and Codecs

As a newbie I am having problems playing files I have exported from my HikVision HiLook NVR. When you export to a flashdrive it asks to select the 'saving type' and there are 15 choices - and I am not sure what to use? I have tried a couple that seem to be saved in MPG 4 format but I cannot play them on my Windows 7 machine on Quick Time, Movie Maker or Media Player and sometimes I get an error message 2048. Its probably me that's at fault but any guidance would be appreciated.

I use VLC to play and convert Hikvision video files.

Yes, VLC is what we would recommend - VLC Media Player Version 3.0 Released - VLC should play most formats.

Thanks guys, that's done it. Never heard of VLC before and a bit surprised it does not seem to be mentioned in the HikVision User Manual.
