Hello All,

I do not have direct experience with HikVision cams, and have a few questions.

My customer looks for a high resolution camera, mainly for night vision.
I have two options in the 8MP selection, one has 30m and the other has a 80m IR range.
Are these figures real, or should I expect them to be much less than advised?
Also, do I have to expect that IR range will fade with age?
If the answer is yes, I will look for the the larger one.

I see that the storage can be on an NFS mount, which is good because we are going to use a Debian based NAS.
Initially, I was looking at Axis, but I believe they cannot do that.
Is there any compatibility issue when viewing or configuring the camera from a Linux based browser (FF, Chromium)?
On the manuals I see a recommendation to use IE, which gives me the creeps..

thanks for reading and your advice,

-Gian

Hi Gian, we have a DS-2CD2T45FWD-I8 (80M IR) installed at a client and at 70M the IR produces a very bright image. It faces a mountain with zero ambient light. Be aware the IR has a 45' or so viewing angle which expands slightly with distance. I have no idea on the impact with age. Framafox portable (allows viewing without issue on Windows) might have a Linux based version - Framakey maybe. I haven't had the chance to work with Hikvision and Linux yet so it's a long shot.
