VLC is something that most IP system owners will come into contact with at some point, it is a powerful media player that can play almost any format or compression of video file with very few exceptions. VLC hasn't been updated for 3 years and the player has started to feel like it is falling behind the video format advancements, so it was great to hear that the software developers behind VLC have released a 3.0 version of the software (updating from the old 2.8 version).
The new version has lots of great features including support for 8K playback, 3D Video, and lots of improvements to the mobile versions of the software. For us though using it for playing back IP camera footage the most important feature of this update is that the software now supports H.265(HEVC) Compression, and from our brief test with the new software comparing it to the older version by playing the same download file on both versions, there was a visible improvement in the playback of the clip on the 3.0 software.
