Upgrading NVR from i series to IDS

Hi all, me again!

I’ve been slowly adding cameras to my home system, and seem to have outgrown the NVR.
Currently it is running x3 4K colourvus, x2 4K darkfighters, 7 line ANPR and 4MP S6 speed dome.
All the 4K cams are doing audio recording, with one of each running 2 way audio/live guard. All the cams are running at least 20fps.
I had the same guy back who’d sorted my previous playback issues out in an attempt to find out why the ANPR is only doing 30% of traffic, on a good day and seemingly worsening. He noted the videos looked very blurry, which he put down to potential focus issues and/or the bandwidth on the NVR being near max. The NVR is an 8 channel 7608 i series, with an inbound around 80mbs. The worsening of performance stacked up with me adding cameras over a series of weeks.
The NVR is at 7 of the 8 channels, and I am wanting future cameras, he advised I go for an IDS-7716NXI-I4/16P/X moving forward. Having looked at the specs this would appear to be a right powerhouse. This would be be my third Hik recorder in under 2 years, having ripped out a POC system in little over a year due to being unhappy with it’s performance. I’m keen for this to be my last recorder for a good few years (it’s been an expensive rabbet hole so far). I want to ability to be able to run all my 4K cams at pretty well max frame rate and the highest quality footage the cams can give. Does anyone have any experience of this NVR, would it be able to manage what I want, including the ANPR?
The tech guy I’m using stands to benefit in no way by me upgrading to such an expensive NVR, other than having a couple of hours config work.

Hi, i'm using iDS-7716NXI-I4 / 16S(B)(Parking) (a little bit special version of FW for parking and ANPR solutions). Hardware is same.
We have two PanoVU cameras connected (DS-2CD6924G0-IHS), one LPR (iDS-2CD7A26G0/P-IZHS), one dual lens camera (DS-2CD6D52G0-IHS), 6 outdoor units of intercom (8003-IME1), two people counting camera's (DS-2CD6825G0/C-IS).

For now it's working perfectly without any problems. Bandwidth is ok. Only thing that is missing is possibility of creating RAID field.

Hi @R_M

For the system you have, both the iDS- and DS- I-series NVRs will perform almost exactly the same. The iDS- is only recommended over the I-series NVR when using specialist cameras like people counting, face recognition, dual lens, etc...

You are using an ANPR camera but that will be supported fine by an I-series NVR, so for the system you have I don't think the iDS- NVR will give you any advantage over the I-series NVR which is about half the price of the iDS- DeepinMind NVR.

Quick update on this. So after much deliberation and many conversations I decided to bite the bullet and go for the IDS7716 NXI 16P. I Spoke once again to my config guy and he reiterated in my use case I do need the additional kick of the IDS. This time around he is doing the set up from the start and should hopefully have no reasons as to why it can’t produce the results I want. I should be able to max out all the cams with no issues now. I’ll update once I have it all up and running.

So we have an update and in typical Hik fashion, there is a kin problem. Had a specialist booked in for 2hrs, and didn’t power the NVR until he was online. Upon getting it online it will only pick up 3 of the cams. Tried various ports and moved this about and still the same.
How is it possible for one person to have so much shit luck with Hik stuff.

To further update I’ve now discovered notifications have stopped worked on the cams which got put back on the old NVR. So all I’ve done is ploughed £1500 in screwing up my already functioning system. What an epic night!

Updated the firmware on the NVR and by upping the power budget I’ve got all the cams online.
However the NVR is not adding to Hik-Connect due to the device showing as being offline.
I am truly at my whits end with this rubbish, even after following advice and getting in pro I’m still streaming angry! Why on earth do you suppliers and installer allow Hik to get away with sending out stuff which doesn’t sodding work out the box! Additionally why are they not making clear to their certified installers where they get their updates? The correct firmware for this NVR was not on the portal, but was on the customer facing product webpage.

Hi @R_M

Does the NVR still not appear online for Hik-Connect if you do everything explained in step 1 in this guide?

Make sure that you also have DNS servers set in Network>Basic Settings>TCP/IP and that the Gateway address is correct (it should be your router's IP address).

For the DNS servers, 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 should work.

If you're not sure what the Gateway needs to be, then tick the DHCP box and click save, which will set this, but make a note of the IP address beforehand as this may change too.

Hi Kyle, thanks the reply, funny enough that’s exactly what I tried. 10-15mins later it had come to life. Not before I’d made a phone call to Hik to express my dissatisfaction at how difficult it has been to migrate from one system to another.
