I have inherited a hikvision cctv with 2 x 10 port Hikvision poe switches and 1 x dumb 8 port switch
i think they are connected as per the diagram below is this the best way to hook them together or why cant i just connect the nvr to a spare port on one of the HK vision switches
Net Opt B.jpg

What brand AND model is each switch ?
Need to know::
  • dumb or managed switches ?
  • VLAN capable ?
  • speeds of ports ?
Brand & model should provide enough info so I can look up the switch spec sheets.

What model of NVR ?

What will "just work / get by" vs "best" depends on the above.

NVR = DS-7616NI-Q!
8 port switch is dumb
10 port POE switches both Hik vision DS-3E0310P
Dont need VLAN the cctv network have put on their own network at the gateway

First some observations:
  • I guess that typo is a DS-7616NI-Q1
  • you omitted the brand/model of the dumb switch, so I'll assume it's a 10/100 switch & it has "zero" 1000Mb ports
  • the DS-7616NI-Q1 has a single 10/100/1000Mb port
  • the DS-3E0310P switches have a 8 x 10/100 + 2 x 10/100/1000 configuration
  • I'll ignore whatever spare ports you may or may not have on your router. I'll also assume your router uses a 1000Mb port.
Bottom line, going with your initial assessment, is fine:
  1. remove the dumb 8 port switch & free up a 1000Mb port on switch 2
  2. connect the DS-7616NI-Q1 to the empty 1000Mb port on switch 2
And you're done. Worst case, re-boot switch 2 as well, but that shouldn't be necessary.
