How to Update a Synology DiskStation

Synology have just released their new software (Version 4.2), which is available to download from today (05/03/2013). So here’s just a short demonstration on how to update your system software.


First log into your Synology box. On your Synology desktop, click the ‘Control Panel’ icon.

Once your control panel loads, click 'DSM Update' under the 'System' tab.

The next window is the updates page. From here your system will automatically look for an update.

After 30 seconds or so your system should find the correct update.

Click the download button.

Once this has downloaded you will have the option to ‘Update now’.

You will now be asked if you want to continue, click 'Yes'.

Your system will now prepare to update.

The system will now update.

Once complete your system will reboot.

Your system is now updated.

And what if it does not connect? I regularly find that my NAS (Synology 214SE) cannot connect to the internet. I connect through BT Homeplug, it works ok once then after a couple of weeks or when next upgrade is advertised I follow the instructions as above, but get the message "Connection failed. Please check your internet connection".
