Getting sound going on my HIK ANPR cameras?

At long last i'm getting to grips with attaching some cheap microphones to my pair of HIK iDS-2CD7A26G0_P-IZHSY license plate cams but i've not very much experience.
I wondered is the sound I'm hoping to hear going to be recorded and be there when I review Video snippets or is the sound just going to be a live sound and not recorded?
My first 2 external mics have been a mixed experience with one not working and the working one being very quiet to hear in the browse despite getting all my setttings down on the HIK interface. I've managed to wire it into the wigan wihthout much fuss and I don''t use a Digital recording box but just a couple of 1/2 TB SD cards in each cam so no other outboard eqpt.

There is a small selection of Hikvision cameras that support some sort of audio - audio I/O, built-in mic, 2-way audio - but on multiple occasions, customers have come back to us saying they are getting no audio on live view or playback.
