DS-2CD2387G2-LU Poor Image quality - Ghosting, Blurry

I've recently installed a DS-2CD2387G2-LU however I'm having real trouble with the image settings. I've tried all sorts of combinations, however whatever I set it to I'm getting really bad ghosting and distorted frames, to a point where the camera is of currently no use other than knowing when the post man's pulling up.

Firmware: V5.7.3 build 220112
4K,
20fps,
6144Kbps,
H.265,
I Frame 20,
Smoothing: 1,
Brightness: 50
Contrast: 35
Saturation: 50
Sharpness: 50
Exposure: 1/100
WDR: Off
HLC: Off,
Digital noise reduction: Off

I've tried all sorts of combinations, increasing the shutter speed, playing with the frame rate and bitrate, even replaced the cable (<5m).

Is it maybe the wrong camera and should have gone with a bullet? I went with the turret because I got a deal on it and didn't think it would make that much difference.

I can provide an image of the full scene if needed, it just looks out on a road and junction so there's lost of details to obscure

The main thing that stands out to me (at a glance) is that you've got the noise reduction off. It needs to be on and probably just left at its default of 50. To produce a sufficiently exposed image the gain is at 100 by default and that will cause noise so DNR is needed in normal circumstances.

Setting the smoothing down to 1 clear also may have negative effects. It's something I always used to do as standard but it causes the bit rate to burst very high and you may find it has unwanted effects. I now just leave that at 50.

Bit rate. On the 8MP cameras with full frame rate I have it set a lot higher and have the video quality set to Highest.

Sometimes it might pay to do a partial default on the camera. In the camera menu there's an option to restore all settings apart from users and IP parameters to default.

The turret is fine, a bullet wouldn't really offer any improvement (they sometimes have a greater range on the illuminators

Are you sure it's not just the smog in Hartlepool!

I love that the one thing I don't obscure is the street sign.... Well played. But yes, probably the smog.

Yeh I played about with the settings a bit more methodically, including turning noise reduction back on (think I seen mention somewhere else of turning it off). Image is a lot better now, thanks.

Lol - I knew I'd seen that road somewhere before - I used to do a lot of alarm installations around Hartlepool years ago. I'm in the Boro. I also had a thought about the "675" in your username but could be way off! My settings are below for one of the 8MP ColorVu's. You might find that you have to lower the exposure time to 1/50 sec if there's not much light and maybe the camera is high up at a distance from what you want to see.
