    Mystery solved! It appears that the latest firmware version has a less than intuitive way into the "Smart" settings. It is VCA -> 2 Set Application -> Smart Event. Cunning, these Chinese but all's well that ends with a solution.

    Instability in the firmware is suspected again as we are unable again to access the "smart event" settings even though the system is set to "Expert" mode. Quite why this should keep disappearing is beyond me. See image.

    Update... Decided to to do a hard reset, followed by an update to the latest firmware. Then used SADP to change the IP to my subnet. At first, the menu options would not show smart event settings but after an hour of tinkering and for no apparent reason at all , the smart event options of line...

    Yes the Hik camera was connected to the POE port for the last 3 years before being deleted and disconnected. No updates were carried out on the camera whilst disconnected.
